How many weddings have you DJed?
As of this writing (Jan. 2020) I have done over seventy-five weddings. The majority of these were ceremony & reception, while some were reception only (less than ten).
How would you describe your style?
My DJing style can vary somewhat depending on the playlist I’m given. For reception dance parties, right now I feel like the best fit for the majority of the receptions that I do is 90s & 2000s Top 40, with a mix of popular songs from today & classics from the 50s, 60s, & 70s. The pace is normally upbeat throughout the party to keep things lively. Dance Parties work the best when there is flexibility for me to respond to the crowd. If there is a response to hip-hop, then I’ll play more to keep them dancing. Same with country, rock, etc. Knowing what genres get a response out of your friends & family ahead of time is always great, but I am generally ready to adjust as long as your flexible.
My personality is laid back, but detail-oriented. Song choice matters to me in a dance party, and when I choose a song to play there is most likely reasoning behind it. Also when it comes to MCing, I normally make announcements as necessary, but refrain from behing a “hype man” and talking to or hyping up the crowd all night. I try to let the music do that for me.
How do we submit songs that we'd like to have played?
Once I’m booked, I’ll send you a link to a Google Doc file specifically for your day that you & I (& other people you’d like to have help) can view & edit. This file is laid out similar to your event timeline & it allows for you to enter your specific songs (or artist names or genres) that you’d like to have played. There’s also a “Do Not Playlist” section for things that you want me to leave out. This doc is updated in realtime so we always have the latest version, and you don’t have to worry about e-mailing attachments back & forth, which is great!
If you download the Google Docs App (available in iTunes & Google Play) you can open this file & add music that you enjoy at anytime! This is great for when you’re both in the car together & an you come across a track that you want to remember!
Just as a reminder, be careful with who you allow to have access to this file! I often use this Google Doc on the day of to view items like your “Do Not Playlist,” and other items like that. I can’t be responsible for changes that they make!
Can you show us your song library?
Sure! If you’d like to see it either during our vendor meeting (or through FaceTime or Skype) please let me know & I can load up my DJ software so that you can see it. In most cases, for venues or vendor meetings, I bring my iPad & not my laptop, so if this is something that you would like to do please let me know ahead of time.
This question is a bit of a quirky one for me…if you want to know that I have a large library of music then I guess this is a good way to do it. I, like most DJs, have a LOT of music on my laptop. I think what separates a great DJ from the crowd is their ability to know what songs to play & when, and not just by having the largest library available. You can honestly have an incredible set with a library of three to four hundred songs or so.
Also, to me, the library of music in my DJ software doesn’t really reflect my individual tastes, simply because the music that I have is generally built around what my clients want.

Do you have any video of your past wedding performances?
As I typically work events on my own, I don’t normally break from DJing to record videos. On the rare occasion that my wife is serving as a day-of coordinator, or if she tags along with me to assist on an event and isn’t busy, she will take time to do a short recording for me. I have a few videos (including the one that is on my website at the top) on my YouTube page. I’ll be working to hopefully get more recordings this year.
Can you help us pick our first dance song?
Of course! Although there is some music for your day that I find very personal, I can definitely help out with or make these selections if you’d like. I always tell couples that the more you put into your day the more personal it is, but there are couples that simply don’t have the time, or aren’t big music lovers that would like this handled on their behalf.
Through our Google doc, you can enter in the selections for the different parts of your day, or you can leave me a note & let me know that you would like for me to work on this for you. You are welcome to give me ideas (“We want a Sinatra style cocktail hour, or a Smooth Jazz dinner”), or you can give me a few artist/song choices & then I can fill in the rest.
I do encourage all of my couples to pick the music for their ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and first dances, but I am more than happy to guide you in making what can sometimes be a tough decision.

What are your rates?
Please send me an e-mail for my most current hourly rates. I will e-mail you a .pdf or .png file that shows my hourly rates along with the equipment that I use for reference.
How long does setup/breakdown take? What's involved?
I charge one hour total for setup & breakdown. Setup, depending on the package that we decide on for your event, can take anywhere from a half hour to an hour & a half. I work with the venue to see how much time they allow for me to be on site before the start of the event, and base my recommended start time on the amount of equipment I’ll need to bring, and the location of the equipment. Things like taping cables down can add more time onto a setup, so if speakers are setup away from my booth/table that style of setup will require a little more time. I’ll work with the venue management to make sure that I have enough time to get everything setup & ready for your event!
Do You Work With A Second DJ or Assistant?
This has not come up yet, but it is something that is available depending on the size of the event, the setup involved, etc. This counts a “special” hourly rate, and the normal rate packages that I have can be adjusted to account for the assistant. Please let me know if this is something that you are interested in so that I can further discuss it with you.
Under normal circumstances I typically setup, DJ, and break down on my own.
Do You Require Any Breaks? If Yes For How Long?
I typically don’t require a special “break” as I normally just work rest/break time into the event timeline. For instance, at a wedding, when dinner is served, I normally eat the provided vendor meal in between speeches, toasts, or announcements while music continues to play. The only other thing that may come up is a short run to the restroom, and those are planned so that actual DJing isn’t interrupted.
What happens if you can't make our event after we book you?
This is difficult to answer, because it never (or hardly ever) happens. I have only had to cancel on one client, and it was two days after I was booked (and eight months before her wedding). My service agreement is the same as a contract and it guarantees my services for your specified date & time. I gave my client that I had to go back on $100 towards booking another DJ, and also recommended a few other DJs that she could speak with about her day. This has served as my standard since. Your events, as well as my reputation, are extremely important to me, and I want to make sure that they are each given the respect they deserve!
I am also in message groups with multiple other DJs that are available should an absolute emergency arise, but you should be fully confident that I will be there as contracted on your day!
How does the payment process work?
I am currently using Quickbooks Online for estimates, invoices, and payments. Once I have the hours I am needed for & your event location, I can send over an estimate for you to look over & approve. Once you’re ready to book, that same estimate (with changes, if needed) will be converted directly into an invoice for you to make your minimum 20% deposit. You are welcome to deposit more or pay all at once if you’d like, but a minimum of 20% of the total must be deposited in order to secure your day/time & take it off of my availability calendar. Details will be outlined on the invoice & in the corresponding e-mail.
***REMINDER that your date/time is NOT SECURE until you make your minimum 20% deposit!***
Your remaining balance is due in full no later than two weeks before your event. If I am booked within two weeks of your event your payment is due in full upon receipt of your invoice.
What happens if we have to cancel?
Cancelling an event is hard on everyone, but unfortunately sometimes it happens. My policy on this is simple:
- Only the deposit for your day is non-refundable. This covers the fact that this day/time have been taken off of my calendar & has been “unavailable” to other clients that were interested in booking. If you have made additional payments those will be refunded back to you, up until two weeks before your event.
- Once we’ve reached the final payment due date (two weeks before your event day), refunds will no longer be issued for cancellations.
- We can attempt to reschedule for another date, but I can not guarantee availability.
I have this awesome guitarist/musician that wants to use your equipment to perform at our event. Is that cool?
I typically handle this on a case-by-case basis. The preference is definitely for performers with amplified instruments to have their own equipment, simply to ensure comparability and so that they can set their levels to their liking, etc. Singers with tracks are normally okay as long as I have their track in good time, and they are there early to check levels, etc. I just need to know ahead of time so that I can be prepared for their performance & have what I’ll need in order to make it work. Please let me know about this during our planning stages, and I will let you know if any additional cost is necessary in order to cover the time needed for additional setup & other items.
As long as you let me know about these items ahead of time I’m sure they’ll work out great!
What's the deal with those awesome shirts from your pictures?
My wedding/event shirts are a fun way to personalize your day, and they also serve as my gift to you for allowing me to be a part of your special event! There are a few different designs/styles that I use, and they include your names, wedding day, and hashtag (if you have one & would like to incorporate it) along with my logo. I also do these shirts for companies for their specific events, normally by just using both of our logos, or by using the name of the event if it’s a named event and you would like for me to do so. You’re welcome to be super involved in this, or you can simply leave it to me. Photographers & family LOVE seeing these and they are always a big hit at events!
If you have family, friends, or colleagues that would like one they are available in the shop for up to one month after your event date. 100% of the proceeds from all of the shop items are split between Autism Speaks & the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, two organizations which are very near & dear to my family. I typically make one each for the couple & in corporate cases one for the event manager.
If t-shirts aren’t your thing, I also can wear a branded polo or a branded dress shirt (with/without tie &/or blazer) if you prefer.
Do you work well with venues/other vendors?
I’d certainly like to think so! Every venue is different, and nine times out of ten I will make it out to the venue beforehand to scope out the area & make recommendations on where my equipment should be setup (if you’d like). I also have to make sure that there is power within a reasonable distance, etc. Venues & other vendors alike are welcome to e-mail me at joel@batchelor.co with any questions.
I normally don’t require much from vendors. I may need to wait for a caterer to setup a table linen if you have special linens for your reception (or ceremony), and a photographer may ask to put flash repeaters or other equipment by my equipment (or store camera bags by the booth, etc., which is totally fine. I am totally fine with day-of coordinators as well. If I have any questions or receive different direction from what we discussed I may try to confirm with either you or someone in your wedding party, but other than that, it should be smooth sailing!
Do you mix songs or just "cut" into new songs?
I am a “mixing” or “transitioning” DJ, meaning in most cases I blend one song into the next. There are occasions where either for dramatic effect, or a request is made from a “VIP,” etc., that I will “cut” a new song in (make an abrupt switch from one song to the next). This is still done on beat. As a request honoring DJ, know that getting to your request may take a little time because of the way that I spin music. In most cases, a request is at a different tempo from the current selection playing so I have to either speed up or slow down the tempo before getting to your request. Just something to keep in mind when making requests!

Is the music for your weddings/corporate events edited for content?
YES. Unless specifically requested, all of my music at a corporate event or wedding is “radio-friendly,” meaning there may be some cursing, but it would be accepted for daytime radio play. Some couples have let me know in the past that after a certain time in the night they’d like to change up the party a little bit & allow for unedited music, which is totally fine. The music that I used for nightclubs/bars is typically unedited or a mix of both, which is why some of the mixes on the site are not radio-friendly. Don’t worry though. If you forget to ask about this, by default the music will be “edited” for your event.

Joel threw an amazing dance party--multiple friends asked us who the DJ was during the reception because they were having so much fun. Words truly cannot describe how grateful we are that we booked Joel for our wedding day! What first drew us to Joel was his approach to DJ-ing weddings. Instead of pressuring people to get on the dance floor by yelling through a microphone, he listens to the couple/guests, observes what music gets people most excited on the dance floor, and lets the music speak for itself! Even guests that SWORE they do not dance, were dancing on our dance floor. One of our favorite moments of the wedding day was when all the guests spontaneously circled around us during the last dance; it was a truly indescribable moment that was brought about by the subtle intentional choices Joel made throughout the night to make people feel comfortable and have a good time. Joel was a 10/10 all around! He is very organized, and makes everything easy! He was recommended by our planner, and was very responsive to our emails. We had a consultation with him where he clearly laid out the details of what he offered, and how he would apply it to our wedding specifically (where he would likely set up, how the night would go etc). Sending him a list of the music we wanted to play, and when we wanted it to play was easy. He also let us know that he would also be able to include song choices that would fit the moment if we wanted him to or if we ran out of song choices for different parts of the day. On the big day, he did an AMAZING job with our rooftop wedding. He played everything on the list as requested, and arranged the songs that we asked him to play in a way that kept the reception fun for all ages, and lively - everyone (young and old) got up to enjoy the fun! We cannot overstate how much fun guests had at our wedding. Thanks to Joel our wedding reception was a lively dance party, and many of our guests reached out to let us know how much fun they had and how great the DJ was. Joel made sure he played all our must-play songs as well as the classics. Joel was incredible. We wanted a DJ who could keep us dancing without being overpowering (DJs with big personalities who try to be loud party captains always feel more kitsch than fun to us). Joel blended into the background but kept everyone dancing for four hours straight (we extended the party). Not only was he easy to work with leading up to the day, but he went above and beyond to make our day special. Unlike other DJs who want to keep your "must play" and "do not play" lists short, he encouraged us to fill it up with as many songs as we wanted. He never played any of the banned songs (despite guest pressure), and kept everyone dancing all night. We first talked with Joel over the phone and instantly clicked. Despite not meeting in-person, we instantly knew that he was the right fit for us. Working with Joel was simple and easy, and he walked us through everything we needed to know, incorporating the vibe we wanted.

Joel was so professional, and easy to work with. He was prepared, and took our suggestions for music into account. Music for the wedding was a really big deal to us, and he totally knocked it out of the park. Before the wedding, he let us fill out a google doc with songs we wanted played, and when. Guests from all generations were absolutely raving about how great of a job he did - it's basically impossible to please everyone, but he did it. During the planning process, Joel made plenty of time to discuss our song list, and made sure to check in with us during the reception to make sure all was going well. And, most importantly, he went above and beyond in the face of unforeseen circumstances to make sure that we had a wonderful dance party. He's calm, cool, and collected, but also fun and engaging. Usually I never write reviews, but Joel was the man. You definitely want him to DJ your wedding. He is a very cool guy. Even from the beginning I could tell he had good work ethic. He was straight up with pricing and the equipment he needed. I actually ended up just chatting with him on the phone like we knew each other. After the initial phone convo all we had to do was give him a couple songs and he killed the playlist. He can do it all! He even stayed later than scheduled for us and made these wicked t-shirts everyone at the wedding wanted. Honestly you cant go wrong choosing Joel.

I wish there was a way to give more than 5 stars for Joel. We contacted Joel to be the DJ for our wedding and he immediately set up a video call so we could discuss our vision. No matter how crazy our ideas were, he was very flexible and excited about our vision for our wedding. Our vision would never have been possible without him. He would always respond quickly with any of our questions and even changed songs on our playlist in the week leading into the wedding. He was extremely professional the day of the wedding and all of the days leading into the wedding. Once the dance party started, it didn’t stop!! Joel played all of the important songs and read the crowd and mixed in other songs that he knew the crowd would enjoy. I had many guests that raved about how great he was and his play style. I can not recommend Joel enough for your next event. Do yourself a favor and book him for your event. It will be a lot less stressful with Joel running the play list for your event and he will definitely get everyone out on the dance floor!!
Joel was very responsive. We scheduled an initial call and he listened to our requests and quickly understood our wedding vibe. He laid out a detailed plan to get our song requests and followed through as the wedding date approached. He was very flexible with our requests and even was able to capture a song that was not widely available for the processional. When it came to the day of, he provided everything we asked without issue. Set up early and stayed till the late night. His late night music was a huge hit for the young and old! I cannot recommend him enough. He was a pleasure to work with.
Joel DJ'd our wedding and he was just fantastic: a true professional and a wonderful person. We could not be happier with our decision. Joel has a talent for reading the crowd and seeing how people respond to the music selection, and then adjusting accordingly on the spot. He also does this cool thing where he layers songs - he will start the next song while the first one is wrapping up (with the beats matching). This has a really cool effect and leaves no awkward lulls while you're dancing. Our guests had really positive things to say about him, and several of them said that he was the best DJ they've heard!
Even more than his amazing DJ skills, Joel was instrumental in the flow and structure of our wedding. He helped the event stay on time and was communicative and proactive the whole evening. He even helped us determine the layout of the reception and sequence of events - he seriously went above and beyond!

Joel is phenomenal! My now-husband and I had absolutely no idea where to even begin looking for a DJ. Joel was recommended to us by a coordinator at a wedding venue that we actually didn't book - and I can't even tell you how glad I am we toured said venue if only because it connected us with Joel. My husband and I - and our families - have taste in music that's very all-over-the-place, but we all love dancing at weddings. To this day, I have no idea how Joel made our tastes - and his own wonderful suggestions - work so amazingly well! It was the perfect blend (which Joel genuinely mixed) of throwbacks that kept our-otherwise-shy families on the dance floor, blended with top music from today, and our own classic favorites. Joel provided us with a Google Doc to add our suggestions, and my husband and I had way too much fun with it - so much so that I'm sure we inundated Joel. Instead of being overwhelmed, Joel was gracious and somehow absorbed everything that meant the most -- he even remembered that I had mentioned playing my parents' first dance song (something I had completely forgotten!) and it was SUCH a huge surprise for them. Add to that, Joel was a wonderful emcee, and the entire night flowed smoothly in large part because of his talent and efforts. We didn't really get pricing quotes from other area DJs, but Joel was definitely reasonable -- and he coordinated getting his equipment set up in both our cocktail hour and reception space without needing anything from us, which meant the world as it was one thing we never had to stress over.
Joel is the absolute best. Hands down. He is attentive to your questions, concerns, and requests as well as helpful in his recommendations and tips for your special wedding day. He shared with us a Doc that allowed me and my fiancee (now wife) pick out all the music for the ceremony and reception with ease. He was so flexible that he adapted to last minute changes with no sweat. All of our music and timing was spot on perfect that I couldn't think of any way it could've been better. From our initial point of communication, we were impressed by Joel’s dedication to and care for his clients. Of the DJs we spoke to, he spent the most time with us understanding what we were looking for and making us feel less like “just another (formulaic) booking” — resulting in us feeling confident that he would do our vision justice. Joel did a walkthrough of the venue with us and responded quickly to every email. He had a collaborative attitude, letting us dictate as much of the day’s playlists as we wanted (which was quite a lot!). Even though it was drizzling before our outdoor ceremony, he worked with our venue to get a cover for his equipment so that it wasn’t an issue when we chose to still have it outside. Our reception playlist especially was long as there are so many songs we love - and Joel made excellent transitions, leaving no song left unplayed. I legitimately remember thinking as he moved from one song to another that I never would have put the two together, but that it WORKED. And it totally did - he had everyone up and moving, even friends who claim to not like dancing! My husband and I are suckers for matching clothes, so the personalized t-shirts were an added bonus. And as an EXTRA added bonus, Joel created and shared the Spotify playlists he made of our requests, so we get to relive the soundtrack of our day. Joel is kind, genuine, and knows how to groove, we simply could not recommend him enough.
What an awesome human being! Joel was our dj for our wedding this past Saturday and I have to say, I am so relieved that we went with him. Having a dual cultural wedding was intimidating since we felt like we had to satisfy both sides. Joel flawlessly guided us through the process and allowed us to bring our vision to life. You were a pleasure to work with. My only regret...not having the opportunity to be out on the dance floor all night long!!! P.s. I love my shirt!!!! Joel was AMAZING. I had the best time at my wedding and danced so much that I still can’t walk. He definitely knows how to feel out the crowd and play the right music to get people dancing. There were guests at my wedding that I know would never dance, and within minutes I see them on the dance floor partying it up!
The music transitions were seamless, and his DJ announcements were very well done. His music request form is very easy to work with and lays out a clear timeline of when and what types of songs should be played. Joel is super accommodating and very easy to work with. When we met him in person, he was very nice and laid back, yet still made us feel assured we had all of our details worked out. He gave us really great advice throughout our talk and really understood the vibe we wanted for the different parts of our wedding. It was also really reassuring for us to know how closely he’d work with our wedding coordinator to ensure our wedding timeline would go smoothly. And it did!
He was great to work with and super quick with his email responses. All the songs I requested at my wedding were played exactly the way I wanted them to. Joel was a great sport with my guests and everyone couldn’t stop raving how good our DJ was. Thanks again, Joel!!!
I had such a great experience with Joel that I can hardly say what he did. Joel was probably my easiest, lowest-maintenance vendor for my whole wedding. He blended into all existing plans without issue. The music was phenomenal and he paid very close attention to our selections. Our first dance choice is a really long song. He made sure to go over it and find a working place to stop so we weren't dancing forever. His mixes were the perfect combo of family and fun. Not cheesy like a lot of wedding DJs trying to keep things super clean on the dance floor (though music was still clean) . And did I mention the t-shirts?! Great!!!
We absolutely loved having Joel as our wedding DJ. My husband is in the industry and is extremely picky about wedding music, but having Joel made him feel confident in the day and how much fun we would have.
